Bruxism

Bruxism Yeronga Bruxism, more commonly known as teeth grinding, is one dental problem that is hard to diagnose by yourself.

You may not know that you have it until your teeth start showing the effects.

Bruxism is the unconscious, involuntary grinding of the teeth, which usually happens at night during sleep.

If you wake you wake up to a sore jaw or feel pain whenever you eat hot or cold drinks, you might suffer from bruxism.

See your Ria Family Dental dentist right away for a general check up.

What Causes Bruxism?

There is no known universal cause of bruxism. However there are studies that demonstrate links of the condition to stress and ADHD.

This means that the more a person experiences stress, the higher the risk of bruxism is or the more frequent and excessive the grinding is.

When under stress, a person’s shoulders hunch up, head moves forward, and the teeth clench involuntarily.

Excessive energy is also released during bruxism, making those with ADHD prone to the condition. Further, those with ADHD often have higher levels of stress.

Symptoms of Bruxism

As noted, bruxism is hard to recognise by yourself until your teeth show the effects.

So how do you know if you have bruxism? The following are things to look out for.

  • Headaches in the morning
  • Sore and aching jaw
  • Sore facial muscles
  • Earaches
  • Clicking and popping of the jaw

Tooth enamel is extremely tough therefore the effects of bruxism may take a while before they show. Teeth worn down by bruxism are:

  • Flattened
  • Chipped
  • Fractured
  • Sensitive to hot or cold food/drinks
  • Loose

Even if you are not sure if you have a bruxism, it is important to refer to your dentist right away for proper diagnosis if you have any of the symptoms.

How Your Yeronga Dentist Can Help

Night splints are protective devices worn in the mouth during sleep. They encase the upper and lower arches of the teeth and protect the teeth when these arches meet.

At Ria Family Dental, night splints are custom-made for utmost comfort and protection. They fit perfectly in the mouth and do not hamper breathing.

Jaw exercises are also given by your Yeronga dentist. Teeth that already show damages caused by bruxism, are repaired through our restorative dentistry services such as dental fillings.
